Our Philosophy

Integrated Combative Arts Academy(ICAA) takes the approach of absorbing what works for you, discarding what doesn't and adding in what is uniquely your own. Our programs are not designed to compete against any other style, system or methodology, but to complement all levels and ranks. ICAA is here to provide each individual with guidance to 'stripping away the inessentials', discovering his or her own unique skill set and developing the ability to adapt his/her self-expression to any given situation.

Our focus is on simplicity, practicality and functionality. We want to teach you martial arts as well as empower you to develop it. We can help you achieve that by providing quality instruction, techniques and drills that will help develop attributes necessary in building a solid foundation for your unique skill set.

JKD Combatives

The JKD Combatives at Integrated Combative Arts Academy, offers a unique insight and training in the art and fighting science of Jeet Kune Do created by the legendary Bruce Lee. The focus of the class is based on the tools and principles found within JKD, with a heavy influence on the philosophy, science, and history of the art. This focus allows us to put it into realistic combative expression.

Jeet Kune Do translates to "Way of the Intercepting Fist". Sijo(teacher's teacher's teacher) Lee also called it Scientific Street Fighting. This base principle really drives those involved to a way of realistic self-defense and mental aptitude. Here at ICAA, we believe that in order to prepare for a situation, you must train as realistic and mentally prepared as possible.

Filipino Combatives

The Filipino Martial Arts(FMA), better known as Kali, Arnis or Eskrima is a weapon-based combat system known for its quick and destructive techniques. The primary training tool is the rattan stick or ‘baston’. Other weapons include the Kris sword, machete-like Bolo, daggers, palm sticks(kubotans) and the Balisong(butterfly-knife). The techniques behind these weapons can also be effectively applied via empty-hands(Filipino boxing or ‘Panantukan’) as well as improvised weapons such as pens, belts, sunglasses, shoes and other everyday items. That being said, Filipino Combatives are extremely practical and functional for real-world self-defense scenarios.

The Filipino Combatives program at ICAA has been influenced mainly by the following affiliates/Guros(Masters) of whom we are proud and honored to represent in the Central Ohio region:

  • IMB Academy - Grand Master Richard Bustillo
  • Cacoy Doce Pares World Federation - Supreme GM Ciriaco "Cacoy" Cañete
  • Filipino Combat Systems(FCS) - Lakan Guro Ernie Lake & Tuhon Ray Dionaldo

ICAA Combatives

Combative Striking
Provides our students the training needed to develop their personal weapons – punches, kicks, knees and elbows, etc. Emphasis is placed on developing a strong striking foundation in preparation for a self-defense situation or competition. This is achieved through proper warm-ups, technical instruction, conditioning drills and controlled and controlled full-contact sparring to further refine skills and technique. This teaches our students the proper body mechanics and footwork necessary for generating quick, powerful and precise striking.

Striking techniques are influenced by Boxing, Muay Thai/Kickboxing, Jeet Kune Do and Panantukan (Filipino Dirty Boxing). The integration of these striking systems allows one to explore a variety of striking techniques while giving them the opportunity to battle-test them and build his/her own unique skill set.

Combative Grappling
Provides our students the training needed to effectively defend themselves on the ground, execute/defend takedowns and regain stand-up position. The importance of the "position before submission" rule is emphasized in which one establishes a dominant position over his/her attacker before applying a submission technique. Conditioning drills promote the development of proper behavior in various ground positions and the appropriate responses to those positions. Grappling techniques are influenced by Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling and Filipino Dumog.

  • Tony Anders:
Tony began his martial arts journey in his youth to learn self-defense and to increase his self-confidence. Along the years, he realized that the martial arts are as much “mindset as mechanics.” Tony met Sifu Tony Jayme in the 1990’s where they trained together at the International Martial Arts Academy. It was during this time where Tony Anders began instructing the kid’s classes and found that kids need a way of learning that makes martial arts safe, relevant, and more importantly, fun. Tony has spent his professional career mentoring and coaching young people as well as coaching Little League. He is now a licensed counselor and brings his skills in human growth and development to his classes. In 1999, Tony was awarded his Black Belt in Contact Karate and was ranked Phase 3 in JKD. He has travelled and trained at many seminars under various JKD notables including Sigung Richard Bustillo, Guro Dan Inosanto and Sifu Ted Wong. He is now returning to train at ICAA with his old friend, Sifu Tony, and to make some new friends. As in martial arts - “Even if you teach, you are always still a student.”
