Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any previous martial arts experience to join?

Not at all! We welcome complete beginners and have programs designed specifically for those new to martial arts. Our instructors will start you with fundamental techniques and gradually build your skills at a pace that's comfortable for you. Many of our most successful students started with zero experience.

What's the difference between Jeet Kune Do, Filipino Kali, and your Integrated program?

Jeet Kune Do focuses on adapting techniques to your personal style, emphasizing efficiency and directness. Filipino Kali (FCS) teaches weapons-based combat and empty-hand techniques. Our Integrated program combines elements from multiple martial arts, covering all ranges of combat. We can help you choose the best fit based on your goals.

What should I wear to my first class?

For your trial class, just wear comfortable workout clothes (t-shirt and athletic shorts or sweatpants) and clean athletic shoes. We'll provide any equipment needed for your first session. If you decide to continue training, we'll discuss uniform requirements and any gear you might want to invest in later.

How do I schedule my free trial class?

Simply call us at (614) 286-1796 or schedule online through our website. We'll discuss your goals, answer any questions, and find a class time that works with your schedule. We typically respond to inquiries within 24 hours.

What happens during a trial class?

Your trial class gives you a real taste of our training. You'll learn some basic techniques, participate in partner drills, and get a feel for our teaching style and class atmosphere. Don't worry - we'll pair you with experienced, helpful students and keep things at a beginner-friendly pace.

Is martial arts training safe? Will I get hurt?

Safety is our absolute top priority. We use controlled training methods, proper protective equipment when needed, and progressive skill development to minimize injury risk. Our instructors are trained to teach techniques safely, and students learn to train with control and respect for their partners.

I'm not in great shape. Can I still start training?

Absolutely! Martial arts training is an excellent way to improve your fitness. We'll work with your current fitness level and help you progress gradually. Many students find that martial arts training is more engaging and motivating than traditional gym workouts.

What if I'm older? Is there an age limit?

We welcome adult students of all ages. Our oldest active student is in their 60s! The beauty of our integrated approach is that techniques can be adapted to work with your body's capabilities. We focus on efficiency and leverage rather than brute strength.

Are women welcome in your classes?

Absolutely! We have many female students who train regularly. Our training environment is respectful and supportive, and martial arts training can be particularly empowering for women seeking practical self-defense skills.

How long does it take to become proficient?

This varies by individual and how often you train. Most students start feeling more confident and capable within 3-6 months of regular training. However, martial arts is a lifelong journey - there's always more to learn and ways to improve.

Do you have belt rankings or testing?

We focus more on skill development than traditional belt systems, though we do have progression markers to track your advancement. Our emphasis is on practical ability rather than collecting belts. We'll discuss our ranking system during your visit.

Will I learn to use weapons?

Yes, weapons training is a key component of our Filipino Combat Systems program. You'll learn stick fighting, knife defense, and how weapons training enhances your empty-hand techniques. All weapons training is done safely with proper equipment.

How often should I train?

Most students see good progress training 2-3 times per week. However, we understand everyone has different schedules and commitments. Even training once a week consistently will yield benefits, though more frequent training accelerates progress.
